HP's Proliant line of servers is in its eighth generation. These servers have become fixtures in SMB datacenters. The latest entry, the DL380p ($2,659–$14,000) is a beast of a machine. Not only can you completely trick it out spec-wise for maximum performance, but it also offers a ton of management and control options. It's the fastest server we've tested, and that's thanks to the expensive configuration HP sent us for testing—an over $14,000 piece of iron. However, even a lower-spec configuration will deliver the performance and reliability that SMBs still need from a server.

Specs
As mentioned, this server shipped to us fully loaded. It has dual Intel Xeon E5-2690 (2.9GHz) processors—with a total of 16 cores. RAM is 128GB DDR3-1600 and storage is comprised of eight 300GB 6G SAS 10K rpm SFF 2.5-inch disks. It's a 2U rack mount server that ships with a small-form-factor ball bearing rail kit. It's a bigger machine than the comparable Dell PowerEdge R420. Disks are configured in two logical drives with RAID 5.

The unit has four GB Ethernet ports, six expansion ports, six USB ports, and shipped with dual power supplies.

There are a few new physical features that HP reps say were customer-inspired. One is clear baffles over the processors and other components, which give you a view of these components. You can easily remove the baffles and access the parts for replacing or upgrading.

PCI risers lift off the system board without any hassle for simple PCI card expansion. There are two other new features I find extremely useful: flat cabling—which keep the inside of the server neat and easy to move around in, and a smart socket guide. This guide reduces the amount of handling you have to do of an actual processor during installation and also makes it easy to correctly seat the processor into the socket. This is ideal, because the processor's pins are delicate and can bend if the component is handled too roughly.

The new FlexibleLOM (LAN on motherboard) feature means you can have your server initially configured with standard Gigabit Ethernet ports only and then easily upgrade to 10 GBe, Fibre Channel over Ethernet, converged networking, or other network connectivity options.

The new SmartDrive feature makes use of tray carriers that only fit SmartDrive-supported hard drives—these drive carriers don't fit into legacy Proliant servers. This is because they are engineered to work with the new SmartDrive capability. The new carrier design also allows double the storage of previous Proliant models.

With SmartDrive, each drive carrier has an LED that will tell you what is going on with the drive— imminent failure or a RAID array rebuild, for examples. There is an additional LED that will light up in the event a RAID array has to be created. This LED tells a server administrator which drive not to hot-swap to rebuild the array. Removing the drive during a rebuild or restore operation can mean a server recovery failure.

The only down side to the SmartDrive LED indicators is that there can be an awful lot of light blinking that looks like major disk activity—even when the server is pretty idle. The drive LEDs spin whenever a drive has an outstanding command. It's a niggle, but it kept raising my blood pressure: to me, that amount of flashing lights means a problem.

If you're a small to medium sized business looking for a high performance server, look no further. The 8th generation HP DL380 released in 2012, features unmatched performance and enhanced configurations, making it one the most impressive servers in the ProLiant line. And if you're looking to save money without sacrificing quality, a used or refurbished ProLiant DL380G8 is an excellent choice.

What are the specifications for the HP ProLiant DL380 Gen8?
The server we tested, boasted an Intel Xeon E5-2690 (2.9 GHz)—with a total of 8 cores of processing power. It's also upgradeable to dual processors (16 cores). RAM starts at 128GB with a maximum of 768 GB (24 x 32GB LRDIMM @1066MHz). The configuration we tested was one of the fastest servers we've ever run – and even the lower-cost configurations can handle demanding server requests or house multiple virtual servers.

The design is a 2U rack mount server, slightly bigger than the Dell PowerEdge R420. Disks are configured in 2 logical drives with RAID 5. The server has 4 GB Ethernet ports, 6 expansion ports, 6 USB ports with dual power supplies.

In this day and age, storage is always a concern. But rest assured, the DL380 G8 offers eight 300GB 6G SAS 10K rpm SFF hot plug, 2.5-inch disks. Plus, the new SmartDrive features tray carriers that allow double the storage of the previous ProLiant models.

If you are looking for a small business server that handles the most demanding requests and offers flexible configurations - the HP ProLiant DL380 Gen8 server is a winner. Speak to the experts at SourceTech and contact us for more information.

With its latest Gen8 ProLiant servers, HP has really pushed the boat out for remote management as they've been designed to virtually manage themselves. Along with freeing up time for administrators, they offer improved I/O, flexible configuration options and, with Intel's new E5-2600 Xeons in the driving seat, a lot more processing power.

In this review we put HP's ProLiant DL380p Gen8 flagship and general all round workhorse on the lab bench. This 2U rack server introduces the new iLO4 embedded controller which comes as standard with HP's Agentless Management, Active Health System (AHS) and Embedded Remote Support features.

These provide enhanced health monitoring plus power and thermal controls and offer an app for smartphone remote management. The iLO4 web interface sees a minor redesign with more information on major components including storage and RAID.

Sea of Sensors 3D
HP's Sea of Sensors 3D provides a wealth of information about all server components.

Sea of Sensors 3D
Server monitoring gets even more sophisticated with HP's Sea of Sensors 3D. Originally introduced in the seventh generation ProLiants, HP has now added around 28 thermal sensors throughout the server and on its own PCI-e and mezzanine cards.

AHS monitors over 1,600 system parameters and stores up to 1GB of diagnostics data which can be securely downloaded to HP support for faster problem resolution. It links up with HP's new SmartMemory and SmartDrive devices and if it identifies a problem, arranges for replacement memory and hard drives to be ordered in advance.

HP's new Intelligent Provisioning means you don't need to boot the server with the SmartStart DVD to load an OS anymore. We were pleased to see this but it's been a long time coming as Dell introduced a similar feature more than three years ago.

Intelligent Provisioning
HP's new Intelligent Provisioning is very welcome as it streamlines OS installation immensely.

RAID and SmartDrives
Storage capacity hasn't changed since the DL380 G7 as the server still supports up to 16 SFF or eight LLF drives. We had the eight SFF drive model but if you add the second expansion cage you'll also need an extra RAID PCI-e card.

The new DL380e efficiency' models focus more on capacity as they have 12 LFF or 25 SFF drive bays. Other differences to the DL380p performance' models are they support lower cost E5-2400 Xeons and have 12 DIMM slots for a maximum memory capacity of 384GB.

The embedded Smart Array P420i in the DL380p links up with the motherboard's pair of SAS 2 ports and offers a good choice of cache memory. We had the full 2GB FBWC (flash backed write cache) module which comes with a fast charging capacitor.

HP's SmartDrive carriers are rather clever as they are packed with status LEDs so you know exactly what the drives up to. A locate LED on each carrier glows blue whilst the drive is being identified by the host and flashes when it's being updated.

The circular button has a rotating green disk activity ring whilst its multicolour centre LED shows the drive status and warns of impending failures. An LED on the carrier release button glows white to warn that it must not be removed where, for example, another drive in the same RAID-5 array has already failed.

HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8
The new tool-free internal design is virtually cable free and has red and blue touch points to show what can and can't be removed.

Internal design
HP's tool free design is even easier to use as the two PCI risers can be removed with just a flick of the wrist. The new Smart Socket guides also reduce the chances of CPU pin damage during upgrades or maintenance. Components are now colour coded so those with red tabs are hot-swappable whereas those with blue tabs must not be removed until the server is powered down.

The review system came with dual 2GHz E5-2650 Xeons which have 8 cores and a 20MB L3 cache. Dual CPU systems have six hot-swap fans and we found the review system to be extremely quiet during testing.

The server had two 750W power supplies but HP also offers 460W or 1200W options which all share a common form factor. The E5-2650 Xeons have a low TDP of 95W and this showed up nicely in our power tests.

Advertisement - Article continues below

With Windows Server 2008 R2 in idle we measured a draw of 109W and under maximum load from the SiSoft Sandra benchmarking app, this peaked at 250W. As a comparison, the Dell R720 we reviewed had dual 2.7GHz E5-2680 Xeons with a 130W TDP and these pulled 120W in idle and 358W under load

Power metering
HP's power metering provides graphical views of consumption but you'll need a license upgrade to activate it.

Virtualisation and network features
For virtualisation, the server has both internal USB and SD memory card slots. However, Dell is the winner if you want hypervisor redundancy as its R720 supports dual internal SD card slots.

Network options have been improved as HP's FlexLOM cards slot in at the back of the server. We had the quad Gigabit version but HP also offers a dual 10GbE card or a 10/40Gbps FlexFabric module. These are very easy to remove and replace and have the added advantage of not requiring a PCI-e slot.

Conclusion
The DL380 has always been HP's star player in its rack server line-up and the new Gen8 model strengthens its position even further. Internal design and build quality are exemplary and the new iLO4 delivers the best remote management features currently available.

Verdict
The new ProLiant DL380p Gen8 is capable of taking on a wide range of roles in the datacentre as it has versatility as its middle name. Storage capacity and expansion potential are very good and HP’s iLO4 and its new remote management strategy really make this server stand out.

HPE has also cut down on the number of memory modules compatible with the server. The number of compatible memory modules has been slashed from 13 in the Gen9 to just seven for the Gen10. This has made it easier for IT teams to build a server suitable for their environment. You now also have the option to add up to 128GB memory DIMMs which gives you much more scalability.

Like its predecessors, the Gen10 has intelligent provision however, HPE have removed inside diagnostics which means you can no longer test offline. This is probably to force customers to buy specifically HPE care support. Apart from removing that key feature, the Gen10 is significantly faster than previous generations and you notice performance benefits almost immediately.
Integrated Lights Out (iLO 5) Offers Advanced Features

Upgrading from iLO4 from the previous generation to iLO5 for the Gen10 offers new and exciting advance features. The iLO 5 is much quicker and more responsive than iLO 4 with double the memory.

The iLO 5 web interface has had a major revamp making it even more informative and HPE has switched entirely to its agentless management service (AMS), negating the need to load any OS agents. Existing users of HPE's OneView must upgrade to v3.1 to support Gen10 hardware. Patience is required as this takes around two hours.
What the End Users Say

Discussions with customers have been extremely positive across the board. Joe Holliday who has worked in IT for 18 years said “The Gen10 is much more powerful than the Gen 8 servers that we were using before. More power means fewer servers for us to buy, and more money to spend on other initiatives, as well as more rack space. HP products are reliable as always!”

Brian Lee who has spent 17 years working in IT in the healthcare industry said, “I have a number of Gen 8 and 9s that are serving me well, and I can tell the Gen 10 will too. From removing it from the box to the end of setup, this server is nice to work with. It's built like a tank and I love how easy it is to expand various components. I really dig the ILO; relatively easy to set up, with a good set of features.”.
Conclusion

HPE's DL380 just keeps getting better with every generation and the latest Gen10 delivers new advanced features in abundance. Although existing users of HPE's OneView must upgrade to v3.1 to support Gen10 hardware, this highly expandable 2U rack server offers a wealth of storage choices and the new iLO 5 controller provides top-notch remote management and platform security. Enterprises and SMEs looking for a powerful and secure 2U rack server that can grow with them will find the ProLiant DL380 Gen10 an ideal partner.

Great value; Xeon Scalable CPUs; Highly expandable; Extensive storage options; Quality iLO 5 management; Strong platform security

HPE's ProLiant DL380 has consistently been at the top of the best seller list - and with good reason, as this is its most capable rack server. There's little it can't turn its hand to and we exclusively bring you the first hands-on review of HPE's new Gen10 flagship.

There's plenty to get excited about as along with support for Intel's Xeon Scalable CPU family, the DL380 Gen10 receives a complete refresh in the storage department with a new modular design. HPE's Smart Array RAID controllers have also been uprated to offer more storage and interface choices.

The server supports 3TB of DDR4 SmartMemory and can handle up to 192GB of HPE's Persistent Memory NVDIMMs. These target high-demand apps such as analytics or databases and provide 8GB of high-performance DRAM, backed up by 8GB of flash mounted on a standard form factor DIMM module.

And then there's HPE's new iLO 5 management controller. It offers a heap of new features as along with improved server monitoring, it has a laser-sharp focus on platform security with silicon fingerprinting, encryption and breach detection technology.

IT Pro Reviews of ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Server
The SFF chassis also supports up to 20 NVMe drives. If capacity is a key requirement, it'll take twelve LFF drives at the front, three at the back and even four in the middle with HPE's custom mid-plane kit.
All models start with HPE's embedded Smart Array S100i chip, which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10 for up to 14 SATA drives. Our server has the Smart Array P408i-a snap-in module which adds SAS3 plus 2GB of flash-protected cache to the storage equation and HPE offers other models with differing cache quantities and external expansion ports
